The journey back to the village passed in a haze of cold, exhaustion, and pain. Even though he’d started to recover, digging out that path had sapped everything Zade had. The plod of his feet echoed on the snow, telling him to keep moving. Someone touched his arm and he glanced up, the glow of the village houses streaming out around them.

Ehlrin frowned. “You shouldn’t have pushed yourself so hard.”

“I’ll live. I just need some sleep.” He nodded toward Ehlrin’s house, the windows lit. “You should go in. I’ll slip back into my room through my window.” If he could get it open.

“They’ll know we were up to something.”

“It doesn’t matter. The passes are closed.” Zade drew a deep breath, letting the cold air burrow into his lungs and keep him awake. He just had to make it back to his room and he could sleep.

Ehlrin grasped his arm. “Come in and rest. The Horati won’t care.”

It sounded wonderful, not to have to move, to be able to sit by the cheery fire again. And it would give him an excuse for not being at home—or climbing through that window. “Fine.”

Reaching for the door handle, Ehlrin shook his head. “We are so going to get reamed for this.”

The door swung open, a burst of warmth rushing out. Ciala rose from the couch as they entered, eyes shimmering. “You… Did you… find him?” Her voice cracked.

“Find who?” Ehlrin asked.

“I know it had to be you, Ehlrin. The guards were knocked out with my herb. You were the only one besides your father who knew where it was. Tell me, please, is he all right?”

Zade’s throat tightened. She needed to know the truth. After all she’d been through, all she’d done for him, she deserved to know the truth, even if that meant others finding out. “We helped him escape.” The words barely passed Zade’s lips.

A tear trickled down her cheek as she lifted a hand to her chest. A moment later she rushed to his side and threw her arms around his neck. “Thank you. Oh, thank you so much.” Ciala pulled back, suddenly studying him like she could see every pain. “You’re freezing.”

“He should really sit down, Mom. He climbed all the way to the pass and created a path for Jamo to get out.” Ehlrin hovered by Zade’s side as if he were about to fall.

If Ehlrin was treating him that way, he must look really bad.

Ciala jumped back toward the couch, pulling Zade with her. “You did what? Did anyone see you?”

Zade shook his head. He’d been very careful.

“Good. Sit down and let me get some drinks to warm you up.” She bustled about the kitchen as Zade sank onto the soft cushions and leaned his head back, eyes closing as if strings tugged them down.

Ciala sighed and his eyes fluttered open once more. She settled beside him, pressing one hand to his forehead. “You’re going to bed.”

“What about the Horati? He’ll be wondering where I am.”

Ciala snorted, crossing her arms with a scowl.
